Dr. Craig A. Smargiasso, Optometrist & Owner
Dr. Smargiasso grew up in the small town of Sharpsville, PA and attended a nearby private school, Thiel College, where he later obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Pre-Medicine. With a passion for medicine and optometry, he continued his education in Bloomington, IN at the Indiana University School of Optometry. During his clinical work, Dr. Smargiasso had the opportunity to extern at a military hospital in Dayton, Ohio, a veteran’s hospital in Perry Point, Maryland, a LASIK and cataract surgery center in Winter Park, Florida, and IU local optometry clinics.
Prior to opening Aurora Eye Care, Dr. Smargiasso practiced in Middlefield, OH in corporate optometry. With the goal of providing exceptional eye care and personalized service, Dr. Smargiasso opened Aurora Eye Care in March 2013.
Dr. Smargiasso is a member of the American Optometric Association, Ohio Optometric Association, Beta Sigma Kappa, and the Aurora Chamber of Commerce. He and his wife, Megan, reside in Auburn Township with their daughter Lia and son Nolan.
Laura Pennybaker, Licensed Optician
Recently, Aurora Eye Care welcomed local Ohio Licensed Optician, Laura Pennybaker. With over 25 years of experience, Laura found her niche in Optics in 1983. Known for her funny sense of humor and smile, she has a unique talent for choosing just the right frame to complete your look. Whether you want a conservative flavor, a corporate appearance that lends presence, or a fun and hip style, Laura will assist you in finding the perfect pair. Furthermore, Laura is an expert in the latest lens technology and is proficient in offering many lens designs to help find a solution that works best with your frame. Laura is a Solon High School graduate and attended Youngstown State University
Lesli Miller, Optometric Assistant
With over 15 years’ experience in the medical field, Aurora Eye Care is fortunate to have Lesli on staff. Lesli has worked in the chiropractic field as well served as an orthodontist assistant. Coming most recently from University Hospital to Aurora Eye Care, Lesli has been with the practice for almost two years. While at Aurora Eye Care, Lesli has taken several continuing education classes in optics and continues to grow with the practice. Lesli comes from a family of three sisters and two brothers along with a wonderful supporting mother. She is married with one daughter, one stepdaughter, one stepson, and one grandson! In her free time, Lesli attends First Baptist Church and enjoys swimming, boating, and gardening. Lesli graduated from Maplewood Vocational School in Small Business Management.
Karen Ozan, Optometric Assistant
Karen’s journey to Aurora Eye Care is full circle as she started her career off as an Optometric Assistant. Throughout her career, she worked in both the medical and banking industries where she served in various roles. Just prior to joining Aurora Eye Care, Karen worked at the Animal Hospital at Ethan’s Green for almost five years. She really loved working at an optometric office, so she continued looking for the right opportunity and we are happy that Karen decided to join our practice in June 2017. She is excited to continue to learn and to one day become a Certified Optometric Assistant. Karen enjoys being with her family, her two Black Labs, traveling and baking. She is married to Philip and they have two sons and two beautiful granddaughters. Karen graduated from Jefferson Area High School in Ashtabula County and has an Associate’s Degree of Science in Radiography from Cuyahoga Community College.
Lisa Blunden, Optometric Assistant
Lisa originally trained in Travel and Tourism and started her career at a Travel Agency where she learned valuable customer service skills booking vacations. While being a full time mom, Lisa kept busy with school PTO, and various voluntary roles. Later, she went to work at a greetings card store in the local community. Lisa is married to Lee and they have two daughters. They all moved to Aurora, from England in 2013, and now that both girls are at college, Lisa is thrilled to join the team at Aurora Eye Care and continuing the great customer service that our patients expect from the practice. Lisa enjoys traveling, home improvement projects and time with her husband, girls and two cavalier King Charles spaniels.
Darcia Smith, Optometric Technician
Darcia joins Aurora Eye Care with a background in Human Resources Management in the health care industry. She was a full-time mom to her two daughters before returning to the workforce and joined Aurora Eye Care in February 2019. Darcia has enjoyed meeting our patients from Aurora and the surrounding communities and in her free time enjoys cooking, reading and spending time with her husband. She has one daughter attending the University of Cincinnati and one who is a senior at Aurora High School. Before moving to Ohio, Darcia and her family resided in Denver, North Carolina.
Barb Dienes, Receptionist
Barb has served as a part-time Receptionist at Aurora Eye Care since May 2013. Previously, she worked in the health care profession at Passport Health as an Executive Assistant where she planned executive travel and inoculation for companies and their associates traveling out of the country. Barb is passionate about customer service which was perfected in her role as an Executive Assistant to the General Manager of Operation and Merchandising Managers at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beachwood for 23 years. Barb enjoys being with patients and their families while providing them with outstanding care. On a personal note, Barb has three adult children and seven grandchildren, keeping her busy with free babysitting and transportation services for all of their activities!
